Global Grooves Vol. 1Chris Dweh · aka Uncle C
The Story
From Monrovia to Winnipeg.
Our roots travel with us.
Born in Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa, Chris Dweh — aka Uncle C — fell in love with Reggae through a single cassette tape of Bob Marley, the King of Reggae. As a youth, he sang Bob Marley songs at his high school talent shows, and at a young age he started writing songs for his friends playing in local bands. Everything came naturally.
Like Marley himself, Uncle C was also a very talented footballer growing up — until an injury ended his game. What looked like an ending became a beginning. When the pitch was taken away, the stage took its place. Music became his new field.
After the passing of Bob Marley, Alpha Blondy came along and captivated him, followed by Lucky Dube. These great prophets of Reggae truly inspired him.
Before crossing the Atlantic to settle in his adopted nation, Canada, Uncle C had already begun recording — two albums in Lagos, Nigeria and one album in Accra, Ghana. He arrived not as a beginner, but as an artist already carrying the sound of West Africa with him.
Upon arrival in Winnipeg, he had the privilege to tour with the legendary Gospel rap artist and two-time Grammy nominee Fresh IE, and collaborated with other outstanding Winnipeg artists like Bubba B the MC, Canadian Afro-Pop star Ben Tamana, Winnipeg's young and upcoming rap mogul Teddy Gramz, and others.
Arriving in Winnipeg from Accra, Ghana as a political refugee, Uncle C turned his journey of displacement into discovery. He turned his experience into rhythm — Reggae for resistance and truth, Afrobeat for celebration and identity.
Known for his heavy, soulful basslines and uplifting message, Uncle C creates songs that heal as much as they move you. His singles "Blessed Is The Hand That Giveth", "Back To My Roots" and "Hello" are anthems of giving, gratitude, and remembering where you come from.
More than an artist, Uncle C is a community builder and a voice for African liberation and unity — using music to bring people together, to honour where we come from, and to remind the world that our roots travel with us, no matter how far we go.
Blessed is the hand that giveth.
